The perils of going with the lowest bidder

I’ve just hired a painter to paint our very large house. He gave a very low bid. An almost impossibly low bid. Now I’m beginning to understand why.

In less than a week of painting he has already:

1. Asked for an advance.
2. Been arrested.

The arrest is perhaps fortuitous, because I haven’t had to give him the advance yet.

    Phew!

We once went with a similar contractor whose DUI conviction meant that his mom had to drive him out to the job site. He did our (small) job after work, with a sullen mom in the front seat of her oldmobile, waiting, waiting, waiting. Lovely.

They’re back at work today, as if nothing ever went wrong! The house does look good, though!
